Vryburg is an agricultural and industrial centre situated halfway between Kimberley (the capital of the Northern Cape Province) and Mafikeng (the capital of the North West Province). Rock art sites of significance are principally engraving sites to the north of Vryburg, the nearest being Bernauw which is now adjacent to the nearby urban area at the north-east of the town. In general, surveying has shown that rock art in the region is restricted to andesite outcrops which do not occur south of Vryburg.
