Curator's comments: Camels at the top of the steep track known as the "staircase" which descends to the lake shore South of Loiyangalani; The Turkana Basin covers about 131,000km² in Northern Kenya and southern Ethiopia and forms part of the Eastern (Gregory) Rift Valley. At its centre is the long Lake Turkana (formerly Lake Rudolf) and the area is renowned in Palaeontology due to the richness of early hominid finds there. The area is rich in engraved rock art sites, notably at the Namoratung’a sites South-West of the lake and various sites to the East of the lake in neighbouring Marsabit County.
