- Significant numbers of rock art sites are found in Marsabit County, particularly on the eastern shoreline of Lake Turkana near Loiyangalani and Kalacha. This rock art consists largely of engravings of geometric shapes, but with some figurative art depicting humans and animals, often giraffes.
This area includes the Mount Kulal Biosphere reserve and to the east of this, the arid Chalbi desert. The rock art area shown here sits within the larger Turkana Basin, a depression which covers about 131,000km² in Northern Kenya and southern Ethiopia and forms part of the Eastern (Gregory) Rift Valley. At its centre is the long Lake Turkana (formerly Lake Rudolf) and the area is The area surrounding the lake is renowned in Palaeontology due to the richness of early hominid finds there.
