Digital photograph (colour); view of painted rock art showing figures of three infilled schematic cows, with horns emanating directly from the shoulders and no necks or heads. The leftmost and rightmost are orange-yellow and facing right, with the centre figure in white. Surrounding them are unidentified geometric shapes in white, some of which superimpose them, including a fine lattice shape at the upper right and two crossed circles at the lower right. Fragments of red pigment are visible below the cattle paintings. Kakapel, Kenya.

The site of Kakapel is located in the hills around Chelelemuk south of Mount Elgon near the Uganda border. There are three adjacent shallow south-facing shelters at the base of a 200m granite outcrop which contain rock paintings, most of which is concentrated in the central shelter with some also found in the western shelter and none in the other. The rock art at Kakapel has many layers of superimposition, with red and white geometric images, potentially of Batwa origin covered by images of cattle.
The site was first published by Osaka Odak in 1977, with documentation carried out by the Trust for African Rock Art first in 1997 and again in 2002, highlighting graffiti damage from the intervening period. Further research at the site has been made more recently with the Rock Art Research Institute of the University of Witwatersrand and the National Museums of Kenya.
