- Curator's comments
- This site is situated on the Kitengela plain, south of Nairobi. The red paintings at this site were made by Maasai morans or warriors. Initiated men from Maa- speaking societies traditionally make such paintings during meat feasting activities when they may not eat meat in their home compounds and so cook and eat livestock together, some distance away, often at rock shelter sites. During this time they may mark the shelter walls with images reflecting animal brand marks or clan symbols. The white concentric circles may be older, of Batwa (hunter-gatherer) authorship.
