Gown: riga. Composed of five sections of dyed blue machine woven cotton machine sewn together. The front body panel including the pocket and the back panel are decorated with embroidery in dyed beige coloured silk. The patterns consist predominantly of circles, knots and triangles.

Riga and Wando (tunic and trousers). Bought from Maiduguri by a student of Heathcote in October 1972, price £6. Certainly second-hand but the date unknown and place uncertain. Factory made cotton. In Zaria the embroidery design would be called ‘Yar Bornu.

- This collection was made over a ten year period in the late 1960s and early 1970s when the vendor and collector, Dr David Heathcote, was Head of Art History at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, northern Nigeria. His PhD research focused on the study of Hausa embroidered dress; this collection was formed as a result of his extensive field research.
