Gown (riga Allah bar Sarki): oblong shaped body with very broad flared sleeves and oblong pocket across the front. The gown is composed of 17 pieces of bleached cotton damask machine sewn together. The gown is decorated with embroidery and cut work and around the neck in biscuit coloured (dyed) cotton. The sleeves and bottom of the gown and machine hemmed.

Riga. Probably acquired in 1971, which was when I was dealing with Malam Gambo, in Zaria City market from a seated blind man when I was on a visit to Malam Gambo. Machine embroidered in a design known as Allah bar Sarki (God save the King). The embroidery design identifies it as a type of gown presented as a gift by the Emir of Zaria.

- This collection was made over a ten year period in the late 1960s and early 1970s when the vendor and collector, Dr David Heathcote, was Head of Art History at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, northern Nigeria. His PhD research focused on the study of Hausa embroidered dress; this collection was formed as a result of his extensive field research.
