Gown: riga. Composed of eight sections of dyed blue damask with a repeating peacock figure machine sewn together. The front body panel including the pocket and the back panel are decorated with machine embroidery in dyed 'biscuit' coloured cotton. All areas of the gown which are embroidered are lined with machine plain woven dyed beige cotton.

Riga. Bought from Ahmadu Ahari on the Zaria University campus in November 1969 for £4. He had acquired it not long before in Zaria. Machine embroidered on imported light blue damask.

- This collection was made over a ten year period in the late 1960s and early 1970s when the vendor and collector, Dr David Heathcote, was Head of Art History at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, northern Nigeria. His PhD research focused on the study of Hausa embroidered dress; this collection was formed as a result of his extensive field research.
