Overview of Routledge collection: This collection of lantern slides were photographed during two archaeological expeditions, conducted by William Scoresby Routledge and his wife Katherine Maria Routledge. The majority of the collection was photographed during the ‘Mana Expedition’ in 1913-1915 to Easter Island, which also stopped in Chile and Juan Fernandez Islands on route. Whilst in Chile, Routledge enlisted the aid of Chilean men and boys. One boy from Juan Fernandez is depicted in a number of images, used as a scale guide. Subsequent expeditions to Mangareva, Raivaevae, and Rapa Iti were made in 1921-1923, during which a smaller number of images were made.
Photographer: The name of the photographer is not known, however, Routledge clearly states in her book that an unnamed person was employed especially to take photographs. Furthermore, it is strongly believed that Katherine Maria Routledge played a strong role in instructing the photographer as to what and how views were to be photographed.
Artist: The collection also contains several sketches by an unidentified artist depicting views of Easter Island. In some cases, the artist could possibly be K M Routledge, but there is no additional information to support this.
Maps and diagrams: There are several maps and diagrams in the collection, depicting the routes taken during the expedition, and listing where Moai (figure carvings) were excavated on Easter Island.
Objects: Some of the photographs depict objects discovered on Easter Island, now in different museums and/or private collections.
