Slide (colour); a phalanx of dancers of Komblo tribe’s Jiruka clan performing during the Pig Festival which climaxed in January 1980. They are dancing at Bunumul, the ceremonial ground of neighbouring Kulka clan. Such visits by contingents of dancers to each other’s ceremonial grounds express both rivalry and alliance, reflected in the clans performing first separately and then as one. The black plumes worn by the dancers are from Princess Stephanie and Sicklebill birds of paradise, each headdress being worth hundreds of UK pounds sterling in 1979 prices. Photograph taken June 14th 1979, Wahgi Valley, Papua New Guinea.
