Slide (colour); one of a sequence of photographs illustrating the process of a Wahgi man (Kinden Kulam) decorating to dance in the Pig Festival. Here Kinden decorates his nose with red paint from a tin of commercial paint he holds in his left hand. He’s already put on his headdress of Pesquet’s Parrot feathers, egret wings and greenery, his bead forehead band (biis mambel), arm bands (angl mum ekle) into which sprigs of greenery have been inserted, and striped dancing apron. Photograph taken January 10th 1980, Topkalap, Wahgi Valley, Papua New Guinea.
