- Curator's comments
- Born in Matata, the Bay of Plenty to a Maori mother and an Englishman. She was brought up with her Maori family and received English schooling. After her marriage and the birth of her son, she put her entrepreneurial skills to use and became a tour guide. In 1901 she publicly welcomed the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York, which led to her successful career. Photographers wished to photograph her, and she was taken to exhibitions worldwide and continued to give tours on Maori culture and heritage.
