Related information: this image was found with a slip of paper stating that it was possibly by W M Notman and Sons.

Context: fire destroyed a five story building on Little St. James Street, during the middle of the night on the 22nd of January, 1888. This photograph was taken the morning of the 22nd, after the water had frozen onto the facade.
