Photograph (black and white) from an album; studio portrait of Spotted Tail (Sinte Gleska) a Brulé (Sicangu) Lakota chief, and his wife, Susie Yellow Horse, posed against a painted backdrop; Spotted Tail is seated on a tree trunk in three-quarter profile with his hair wrapped in a cloth wrap on one side; he wears a cloth shirt and vest, beaded trousers, with a blanket loosely wrapped around him; he holds a pipe and beaded pipe bag in one hand; Susie Yellow Horse is seated on the floor, which is covered in dry grass, beside Spotted Tail, and she has braided hair; she wears dentalium and abalone shell ear ornaments, dentalium shell necklaces and a beaded hide dress; Washington, D.C, USA.

Context: this image was taken by Gardner in Washington DC, when a delegation of Brulé Sioux traveled there to meet with the U.S. Government officials.
