Cape Colony, portrait of Xhosa [?] family group. Adult male and female standing, small group of adult females and children sitting on ground. Two young adult males standing at left. Males wearing European clothing, adult wearing hat and smoking pipe. Females wearing cloths which cover whole body, head-cloths, personal-ornaments. Children unclothed, some wearing personal-ornaments. Circular building with domed thatched-roof in background. Rural setting. Domestic dog at right, appears to be tethered with chain to small tree.
Medium: Black and white. Collotype?
Format: Mounted on card. Second print mounted on other side of card.

Biography: Unclear whether 1898 refers to date. Unclear whether McCarthy, inscribed on mounts of some images in series, was photographer.
