Having expelled the Spaniards in 1641, Honoré II went over to the French and, in 1642, was rewarded with the Duchy of Valentinois, a peerage and the Order of the Holy Spirit.
Judging by the fabric and appearance of this medal it must have been struck at the Monnaie du Moulin and it is probably by Jean Warin - compare the lion shoulder-piece with Warin's medal of Louis XIV, also dating from the mid 1640s (registration no. M.2520).
