- Curator's comments
- Medallic Illustrations 1, published in 1885, states:
This very much resembles the obverse of Medallic Illustrations 1, p616.28, but it is without date or legend. It was perhaps executed for a medal similar to the preceding, but rejected on account of the portrait, which is very unlike those on other medals of James. It may, however, have been only a study by one of John Roettier's sons. The die was amongst those purchased from the representatives of Roettier by Mr. Young, who presented it to the British Museum.
