- Curator's comments
- Brown 1980 states:
Robert Fellowes (1771-1847), philanthropist. Editor of 'Critical Review' and friend of Queen Caroline. Fellowes was a benefactor of Edinburgh University and one of the promoters of the London University, now University College. Out of gratitude for the personal services of Dr John Elliotson who held the chair of medicine in University College, he provided two annual gold 'Fellowes medals' for proficiency in clinical medicine.
This piece is one of the prize medals and the recipient's name is sometimes to be found on the edge in engraved capitals. The bronze specimen in the Ashmolean has the number 795 stamped on the edge.
