- Brown 1980 states:
Struck for the Friendly Association of Ireland as a reward for the officers and men of the Bantry Garrison. The officers of the Galway militia received specimens in silver. The medal commemorates an attempt by a French fleet for the purpose of assisting the United Irishmen under Wolf Tone. The French fleet commanded by General Hoch consisted of 43 ships, but after leaving Brest they became dispersed during a storm and only 16 reached Bantry. Hoch failed to appear and the 16 ships were forced to return to France.
