- Brown 1980 states:
The siege began in 1779 and was carried out by a combined force of Spanish and French troops. Attacks by land and sea were frequent and the bombardment sometimes intense. General Eliott was Governor of Gibraltar throughout the siege; eventually this was lifted and England retained control of the Mediterranean. George Augustus Eliott (1717-90), first Baron Heathfield, was educated at Leyden University and the Military college of La Fère. He served in the Prussian army, 1735-6 and was present at the battles of Dettingen in 1743 and Fonteney in 1745. He was Aide-de-Camp to George II in 1755 and became major general in 1762. He was second in command in the Cuban expedition and in 1763 was made Lieutenant General. He became Commander-in-Chief of the forces in Ireland in 1774-5 and governor of Gibraltar in 1775. In 1787 he was created Baron Heathfield.
