Notes:
The obverse is struck from the same die as registration no. M.2234 and at about the same time.
This reverse is also found with a medal dated 1605 (see Mazerolle II, 792), not attributed to the Danfries. The exergue is, however, so similar to that found on registration no. M.2226 that it seems very likely to be by the same artist.
This combination of obverse and reverse does not seem to have been published.
The medal may refer to the establishment of a French colony, beyond the pillars of Hercules, in Canada, in 1604.
The reverse has been thought to copy that of registration no. M.2197. It seems more likely, however, (see notes to M.2197) that the relationship is really the other way round.
