- Medallic Illustrations 1, published in 1885, states:
Not rare.
This medal by George Bower is of rather smaller dimensions than the others on this subject (see Medallic Illustrations 1, p573.245 – p579.251), the relief higher, and the work coarser. The design of the reverse is copied from medals which were very common at the time of the Reformation, and of which the object was the same, to satirize and ridicule the followers of the Pope. The Popish Plot and the death of Sir Edmundbury Godfrey contributed to excite determined hostility to the Papal power and influence.
See Pinkerton, J., ‘The Medallic History of England to the Revolution’, London, 1790 (fol.), xxxv. 3.
see Medallic Illustrations 1, p573.245 for more information about Sir Edmundbury Godfrey's death.
