The reverse indicates that no pen would be equal to describing the actions of the Prince so that it would be left to Fame to say the rest. The legend derived from a phrase of Ovid's: 'Materiam superabit opus' (Metamorphoses 2, 5).
Louis II de Bourbon, Prince de Condé (see registration no. M.0611) was, under Louis XIV, in command of the army which conquered the Franche Comté early in 1668. The reverse refers to this great feat of generalship.
Menestrier, writing in the late 1670s, cited this as one of the devices found on the reverse of medals which 'font un méchant effet à la vue' because not invented specifically for medallic use (see 1).
