- Medallic Illustrations 2, published in 1885, states:
Very rare.
This medal commemorates the dangers and difficulties to which the King had been exposed. After a very stormy voyage he got into a small boat, but the waves were so boisterous, and there was such an accumulation of ice, that he was exposed to the severity of the weather, with no covering but a cloak, for nearly twenty-four hours. He was received with great joy at the Hague, and he, who had thus been preserved, was hailed as the preserver of his people.
