- Curator's comments
- According to Peck catalogue "the pieces listed in this section have reverse designs or legends which point strongly to a private rather than an official origin. Most have one or both legends in English. The most common inscription THE POORES RELEIFE, which occurs mostly frequently is a typical 'petitioning' legend, quite unthinkable on an official pattern, and the style and workmanship of the five pieces which bear it are consistent with what might be expected of patterns submitted by private token makers. The edging, whether inscribed or grained, is in all cases relatively poor." According to the same source. "It has not been possible to date any of these patterns, but it is likely that the 'Poores Reliefe' pieces were made quite early in the reign: all are exceedingly rare."
