- Brown 1980 states:
Henry, Cardinal York, 'the last of the Stuarts' was the brother of Charles and son of James, the Elder Pretender. He died in Rome in 1807. It was on the occasion of the death of his brother Charles that he ordered these to be struck.
There, are two varieties of this medal showing different positioning of the chain supporting the cross on the obverse and minor details in the positioning of the reverse legend. The whole design was copied from a somewhat similar medal of Henry by Filipo Cropanese in 1766. (Brown 1 p24.99). Some specimens do not have the artist's name on the truncation and are probably later strikings.

- Acquisition notes
- The Bank of England loaned their Collection to the British Museum in 1865 wishing to make it accessible to the general public. This remained as a separate Collection until 1877 when the Bank Directors decided it would be more useful to the museum and the public if incorporated into the national collection. The Bank of England collection was therefore presented to the British Museum in 1877, any duplicates being sold to create a coins and medals purchase fund.
