- Curator's comments
- Object collected by Robert Bracey in Mumbai in 2015. As he observed:
'Thousand rupee notes were issued by the money exchange at the airport but none were more recent than 2008. These are in practice difficult to spend. Coins were extremely rare in circulation - many market traders refusing to give change below ten rupees. 5 Rupee coins when encountered were almost always old. Colleagues confirmed that coins had attracted a premium and so were quickly culled from circulation leading to a general shortage. This was much more pronounced than on my previous visit when the five rupee note was still circulating.'
