- In 1870 a law was approved on Puerto Rico granting freedom to certain categories of slaves including those over the age of sixty, those belonging to the state and children of slaves born after September 17, 1868. The law also resulted in the registration of slaves. Slavery was abolished in Puerto Rico in 1873.
