Male figure, with drapery at waist, over left shoulder and flying out behind to left, standing facing front in rowing boat, extending right arm out and raising left hand to head, bare, facing three quarters right: seagull in flight to right. (obverse)

Male figure, draped, standing left, holding branch up in right hand above columned plinth on left with inscription, in seven lines, and resting left hand on globe to right, head, laureate, left: on ground centre, scroll and sextant amongst olive branches. (reverse)

- Curator's comments
- The first Cullum Geographical Medal was awarded in 1896. Named in honour of Major General George W. Cullum, Vice President of the American Geographical Society from 1874 until 1892, the medal was to be awarded "to those who distinguish themselves by geographical discoveries, or in the advancement of geographical science". This medal was awarded to Captain Robert Falcon Scott in 1906 in recognition of his 1901-1904 expedition to Antarctica.
