- Curator's comments
- According to Maier, the medal was also exhibited under the title 'La Mine', and the reverse design is based on Greber's sculpture 'Le Grisou' ('firedamp') purchased by the state in 1892 in plaster and four years later in marble. Firedamp is an inflammable gas, such as methane, found in coal mines, which can be explosive.
The medal was designed for the Société des Amis de la Médaille Française (SAMF). It is number 166 from an edition of 192, which was distributed in 1907.
