The French Republic as dawn, three-quarter length, wearing the Cap of Liberty, surrounded by rays, appears on the horizon, overlooking the Place Royale in Reims; in the foreground, the French cockerel stands victorious, one foot placed on the defeated German eagle, beneath them, a reclining bovine and the City of Rheims shield, resting against the top of a damaged balustrade. Two winged and draped female figures, one of them Justice brandishing a sword and scales, fly through the air to left, in pursuit of a German soldier holding a dagger and a torch, who flees to right, walking over the bodies of a French family comprising a father and a mother who cradles an infant; to left Reims Cathedral in flames. (reverse)
