- Curator's comments
- The White City (or 'Great White City') was named for the white plaster finish of many of the exhibition buildings and pavilions, most designed in an elaborate style with domes and arabesque arches, which were linked by a network of roads, bridges, and canals, and centred around an artificial lake. Imre Kiralfy, as Commissioner-General for the Franco-British Exhibition, developed the exhibition grounds on farmland at Shepherd’s Bush where he built the Great White City as well as the Stadium used for the 1908 Olympics.
