10 ryo (oban) coin, 1819-28
大判・小判
Gold coins
These gole coins are 10,5 and 1 ryo pieces.
One ryo would officially buy one koku of rice, enough to feed one person for a year. This is about £300 to £400 in today's money.
Gold, silver and copper coins were produced at separate mints, all controlled by samurai officials.
