- Brown 1980 states:
Valenciennes was besieged from the 23rd May until the 28th July 1793 when the French garrison surrendered to the allies under the Duke of York.
The original proposals for this medal were for the issue to be in silver and bronze and priced at one guinea and fifteen shillings respectively. No figures are given for the white metal specimens and it may be that these were struck at a somewhat later date. Half of the subscription price was to be paid on subscribing to the medal, the remainder was due on delivery.
