The King left Carlton House, Pall Mall, on the 31st July and proceeded to Ireland where he arrived on the 11th August. On the 17th ofthat month he made his public entry into Dublin. On the 5th September he departed from the harbour of Dunleary, arriving back at Carlton House on the 15th September. Originally the King and his suite were to be conveyed to Ireland in the 'Royal George' but owing to adverse weather conditions the royal party were transferred to the 'Lightning', a steam packet commanded by Captain Skinner. The 'Lightning' bore only a common British ensign and was accompanied by the 'Meteor' steam packet. The crowds awaiting the arrival of the King did not expect him to arrive in such a conveyance but were delighted to recognize him standing on the quarter deck. See The 'Gentleman's Magazine', 1821, vol. II, p. 171.
