- Curator's comments
- The altar depicted is that set up as the central point of the "Concilium Galliarum" and is likely to have been dedicated by Augustus on 1 August 10 BC, (the same day of the birth in that city of the future emperor Claudius).
The initial series of aes bearing a representation of the Altar extended over the following three or four years. The 'Altar II' series, including issues in the name of the imperial heir Tiberius, was instituted about AD 9 and continued to the end of the reign.
