John Prideaux (1578-1650), son of a Devon farmer, was elected to a fellowship at Exeter College, Oxford in 1601 and became Rector of the college in 1612. Regius Professor of Divinity from 1615 and Vice-Chancellor of the University 1619-21, 1624-6 and 1641-1643, Charles I appointed him Bishop of Worcester late in 1641.
