- Curator's comments
- According to Withers 1999 "these tokens have come to be regarded as belonging to Walthamstow because Davis listed them as such. The true obverse is clearly the side that Davis regarded as the reverse, and the piece can only be intended to be read as : British Copper Company, Smelting Works at Landore, Rolling Mills at Walthamstow. Landore was, as Coxall says, a grimy and barren hamlet, about two miles from Swansea, so presumably the output of such a tremendous number of tokens could not be necessary for that place - and if one thinks about it, they would have not have been necessary for such a place as Walthamstow either, an area of marsh and not much else. The most likely explanation is that they were circulated, by and large, in London and perhaps Swansea, as well as to pay the workers at Landore and Walthamstow."
