- Medallic Illustrations 2, published in 1885, states:
Not rare.
This medal was struck by direction of the Astronomical Society. In 1831, when the Society received its royal charter of incorporation, and assumed its present title, the above medal was ordered to be struck. The first impression was issued in 1834.
