- Curator's comments
- The vows of office for Constans's quinquennalia (fifth anniversary as emperor) are recorded with the formula: 'as five [years], so ten [years]'.
This medallion, along with four or five others at the British Museum, is thought to be from a hoard found at Neutor near Trier in 1635 (see Gilles 1989, who is able to trace and list thirteen coins including eleven medallions). The medallions had probably been wrapped in a roll (in a similar way to which modern banks wrap set amounts of coins for convenience of handling) as many of the examples have suffered similar edge damage apparently from the spade which unearthed them by chance in the 17th century.
See Gilles, K.-J., Ein weiteres Multiplum aus dem Silberschatz vom Neutor in Trier? in Trierer Petermaennchen 1989, pp. 71-80.
