Room 95 label text: PDF A749 Doucai ‘Chicken cup’ In China, an image of a chicken is a rebus for good luck because the words for chicken 雞and lucky 吉are both pronounced ji. Artists depicted the theme of a hen pecking for food with her chicks first in paintings and these probably inspired the porcelain versions. This cup is a Qing dynasty, Kangxi period copy of a Ming doucai cup. There is six-character Kangxi mark in underglaze blue on the base.
