Green-and-yellow dish with dragons
This dish is incised with five-clawed dragons, shown in profile with clenched jaws, chasing flaming pearls and each other amid auspicious ruyi clouds. Potters inscribed a four (as opposed to the usual six) character Zhengde reign mark in underglaze blue on the base and covered the inside and base with a transparent glaze, then, before a second lower temperature firing they picked out the dragon and cloud design in green glaze on a ground of yellow. Potters working at Jingdezhen a century earlier, in the Yongle (AD 1403–24) reign invented this green and yellow colour scheme and design.
