Room 95 label text: PDF A626 Blue-and-white stembowl with red dragons Potters incorporated all the latest early fifteenth century porcelain technology when making this stembowl. Craftsmen added an暗花 (anhua ‘secret or hidden decoration’) of raised slip, showing two five-clawed dragons chasing each other and their flaming pearls inside the cup in the cavetto. This pattern is only visible when held to the light. They decorated it outside with an incised design of five-clawed dragons coloured by underglaze copper-red against a dense pattern of underglaze cobalt-blue painted waves with white crests. Porcelain with incised, anhua, underglaze cobalt-blue and underglaze copper-red decoration Jingdezhen, Jiangxi province Ming dynasty, Xuande mark and period, AD 1426–35
