Misfired Ru ware dish
Potters in Henan province made Ru wares for just twenty or possibly forty years for the Northern Song court between AD 1086 and 1106 or 1125. Very few examples survive today outside the kiln sites. Ru wares have a slightly under-fired (1200 to 1250 degrees centigrade), thin, pale-grey, stoneware body, with a comparatively thick celadon glaze. Most Ru wares were fired upright in saggars on setters with three or five spurs which left tiny sesame-seed shaped unglazed marks on the base. This dish has distorted during firing and its glaze has failed. That it has been preserved and collected is perhaps testimony to the high regard for Ru ware both in China and by international collectors.
