Room 95 label text: PDF 689 Blue-and-white vase with fountains The main design on this blue-and-white bottle vase derives from a European print. It features a kneeling horse with a fountain on one side and an elephant with a fountain on the other. Portuguese merchants established direct trade with China in the early sixteenth century. They traded Chinese porcelain which was a treasured commodity in Europe. Most of the ceramics they imported were ordinary underglaze blue painted wares but some items copied European metalwork or ceramics’ shapes and others had designs taken from European sources such as prints, coins, or textiles.
