Brush-washer
This shallow dish-shaped brush-washer is covered in a beautiful green-blue crazed glaze which has incredible depth. It was designed to stand on a writing desk filled with water to cleanse calligraphy or painting brushes. Potters fired Ru wares like this in kilns shaped like 饅頭 mantou (steamed bread buns) fuelled with wood. In AD 2000, more than fifteen kilns were discovered at the edge of the remote village of Qingliangsi, near Baofeng in Henan province. Two workshop areas, together with mounds of kiln debris and broken pots, were also unearthed, testifying to a short but intensive period of celadon production.
