- Curator's comments
- This small porcelain bowl (or choku) was produced in Arita during the 1660-70s. The transparent glaze is slightly bluish because the body and or glaze contains iron. The body was formed in a press-mould. The glaze around the footring looks dark, suggesting the latter was attached after the body was formed. Traces of the potter's wheel on the lower part of the outer surface suggest that it was smoothed during the final production process. The glaze is carefully applied on the footring and the edge of glaze was wiped or cut out. This careful finishing is very rare and special, as it required a siginificant amount of work.
