Hat; part of girl's festival and market costume As.1998.1.339 to 342. 'Pillbox' style, with base cloth of bought black satin lined with undyed calico. Constructed with circular top made of pleated cloth drawn up tightly with hole in centre with draw string. Centre and band stiffened with paper lining. Decorated on band with applied strips in red and blue, embroidered in fine cross stitch in repeated geometric motifs in warm red, maroon, white, blue and green. Between main strips are strips of gilded paper. On circular top is red and green cloth applied at top before pleating, also gilded paper and green cloth half-way up.
