Skirt; from woman's festival or market costume As.1998.1.278 to 280. In two bands: i) waistband of manufactured twill cotton in deep blue, made of folded-over band with ties of blue cloth; ii) weft of hand-processed ramie, warp of bought cotton yarn, with selvedge at bottom. Pleats gathered into waistband and one line of stitching holding pleats below this. Decorated mainly with wax resist: eight horizontal bands kept white by use of wax, with wide band at hem. Two of these bands are subdivided into squares into alternating pattened and plain areas, dyed indigo. Some plain squares are covered with appliqued red shiny cloth; some of these are embroidered with patterns in blue, yellow and green silk.
