Skirt; from girl's/woman's market or festival costume As.1998.1.265 to 268 a & b. Tightly pleated, with ties. Base cloth of hand-woven cotton dyed dark indigo with brownish sheen. Constructed in seventeen vertical panels, with cut edges at bottom (some fraying). Decorated with embroidery in black, white and orange silk forming a horizontal band about 23 cms from bottom hem. Embroidered in cross stitch directly on skirt panels, in two different desings: at centre is frieze of stylised people on horses; remainder is speckled pattern with no imagery made by vertical lines of running stitches.
